What is hormone replacement therapy?
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be used therapeutically for many conditions. The most common condition that warrants the use of HRT is menopause. HRT can also be used in men, as the male hormone testosterone decreases with age.
What is menopause?
Menopause and the years leading to menopause can cause symptoms that can greatly affect a woman’s quality of life. During this time, the female sex hormones (estrogen and progesterone) start to decline and the body behaves differently. Eventually women stop having periods altogether.
Replacing these “low” hormones can help alleviate the temporary symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, low libido, painful intercourse, irritability, mood changes, and insomnia. It can also help with long-term wellness for women, improving cardiovascular health and increasing bone density.
What is andropause?
Just like with women, the male body changes as men age. One of the biggest changes is a decrease and/or imbalance in sex hormones, primarily testosterone. This decline in male sex hormones is often referred to as andropause, or “male menopause”, and can cause depression, fatigue, not feeling like oneself, and erectile dysfunction.
There are different treatments available for andropause, each customized to the individual patient.
What is "bioidentical" hormone replacement?
Historically, “bioidentical” or “natural” hormones referred to the hormone replacement products made by compounding pharmacies, like Customedica. We source these hormones and make them into various dosage forms, such as creams or capsules. “Bioidentical” refers to the fact that these hormones are made to be chemically identical to the hormones our bodies make. They are chemically derived from compounds occurring naturally in plants like soy and yams, followed by some chemical alterations.
The alternative method is to supplement with “synthetic” or “commercially-available” hormones. These are branded products made by large pharmaceutical corporations that have altered chemical structures when compared to our naturally-occurring hormones. These alterations allow the chemical to be patented, which is why larger companies prefer to make these altered hormones.
How do I get a prescription for hormone replacement?
A prescription is required for the vast majority of hormone replacement products. Many prescriptions for hormone replacement are written by OB-GYN’s, as they are commonly seen for symptoms associated with low hormone levels. OB-GYN’s and other practitioners specialize in and feel comfortable prescribing compounded hormone replacement therapy.

How do I take hormone replacement products?
There are many ways to take the hormone - you are not limited to what a manufacturer makes. At a compounding pharmacy like Customedica, we can put hormones in creams, capsules, lozenges, sublingual drops, suppositories, rapid-dissolve tablets, and many other forms. The possibilities are almost endless. Each dosage form has unique advantages, as well as disadvantages. That’s why it’s important to consult with a professional pharmacist to help you find the perfect solution.
